The Longhouse is situated close to the river Dee between the small villages of Bridge of Dee and Rhonehouse. Rhonehouse or Kelton Hill as it used to be known was in the eighteenth century the site of Kelton Hill Fair, the biggest horse and cattle fair in Scotland.
The surrounding landcape is typical of this part of Galloway with rolling fields, drystone walls or “dykes” and small woods opening out to a wilder landscape of rocky, heather-clad hills. However Dumfries and Galloway is also a coastal region so you are never very far from the sea, and the dramatic Galloway coastline. On the coast you will find towns like Kirkcudbright, famous for its artists’ colony, and small picturesque villages like Kipford and Rockcliff. Castle Douglas the local market town has a fascinating variety of small shops and cafes. There are sandy beaches just a short drive away and for the more adventurous there are challenging walks in the rugged Galloway hills or mountain biking on one of the many trails in the area.
The area is home to a great variety of wildlife, like the nesting ospreys at Threave Castle, or the amazing red kites that have been introduced at Lauriston and are now thriving throughout the county. You will see them circling in the sky above The Longhouse searching for food. Swallows return to us every summer and can be seen on the wing, diving and wheeling all around the house .
The Longhouse is close to Threave Castle and to the world-famous Threave Gardens. The castle was once home to the Black Douglases, a particularly savage clan. The castle is set on its own island on the river Dee just a short distance from The Longhouse and is accessed by a short boat trip as shown in the photograph.
Threave Gardens are only a short walk or drive away. Run by the National Trust for Scotland, the gardens are one of the top ten most visited Trust attractions. In 2013 Threave was voted second in The Independents 10 best gardens to visit in the UK.Threave estate is a wildfowl sanctuary and a huge variety of birds can be seen throughout the year.
